What is a stud bolt?
In simple terms, a double-ended stud bolt is a bolt with threads on both ends and a smooth shank in the middle. Unlike the commonly used hex bolts, it can be fitted with nuts at either end.
Common materials include: carbon steel grade 8.8 double-ended bolts, carbon steel grade 10.9 double-ended bolts, carbon steel grade 12.9 high-strength double-ended bolts, and stainless steel 304 and 316L double-ended bolts.
Although ordinary bolts can solve many problems, they do have certain limitations.
For example, for assemblies that require frequent disassembly, using standard bolts can lead to stripped threads after repeated tightening. In contrast, with double-ended studs, if the nut becomes stripped, the entire stud can be replaced directly.
For example, in heavy‑duty equipment and bridge structures, using double‑ended studs together with lock nuts helps prevent loosening and enhances fatigue resistance.
The aforementioned common applications include automotive engine blocks, flange components for construction machinery, LNG pipelines, molds, steel‑structure bridges, heavy equipment, and suspension systems, among others.
How do you choose a double-ended bolt?
Regarding the selection of double-ended studs, I have conducted the following analysis:
1. Automotive sector: Vehicles are subjected to constant driving and vibration, necessitating frequent maintenance; double-ended studs can significantly reduce maintenance costs.
2. Heavy-duty equipment: Steel‑structured bridges and heavy machinery can enhance shear resistance, thereby improving their safety.
3. Tight spaces: First tighten one end; whichever end it is, the narrow space makes installation straightforward and secure.
4. Energy Transmission: Gas-tightness can be ensured during the transport of liquefied natural gas, petroleum, and asphalt.
At the same time, it is essential to select the appropriate material for double-ended studs based on the specific application.
Stud bolts are not fasteners to be used indiscriminately; in certain applications, they offer far greater value than standard bolts, helping to significantly reduce maintenance costs and mitigate safety risks.
